Harry Potter 7

After I finished Plain Truth which had an astounding ending, I didn't want to ruin it for whoeveer is reading this blog so, I reread the seventh Harry Potter naturally. This book is so good and a grreat ending to an amazing series. In the final installement, Harry should be going back to Hogwarts to finish his wizarding schooling, but instead he sets off with his trusty and loyal friends, Ron and Hermoine. The trio are on a long search for the evil Voldemort's Horcruxes, or for those of you not in on the HP lingo, the pieces of voldy's soul. They travel far and wide searching and finally find one, but they don't know how to destroy it.... OH NO! Then, when Ron unexpectedly quits the team, Harry and Hermoine are crushed. After a close encounter and almost death by the hand of Voldemort, they are shell shocked and very afraid. Ron returns, but then the three get captured by Voldy's people, dangit. They somehow escape and find another Hocrux, with one destroyed. Then they make thier way back to Hogwarts to search the castle for what they seek. Voldemort figures out where they are and lays siege upon the castle. Harry finds out in a strange way that he must die for Voldy to be defeated. He is "killed" but he survives to finally defeat the famous and terrifying Lord Voldemort! YAY HARRY POTTER! then there is a prologue about nineteen years later which explains all that became of our favorite characters such as Ginny, Neville, Ron, Hermoine, and of course, our favorite, Malfoy. Haha. Just kidding and of course, our favorite, Harry.

Plain Truth 2

This book didn't really intrigue my interests at first but i admit that it is getting better.  But, in my defense, who wants to read about a murder case that looks like its gonna lose no matter what? Not me.  I like books with happy endings.  Anyhow, I am going to look at a quote from Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult.  Here is the quote:
"'Yeah. The issue here is that a long time ago, Katie stopped being a client.  Maybe from the very start, even.  She's related to you, however distantly.  She's likable, young, confused--and you've fallen into the role of surrogate mother. But your feelings for her are a mystery, because for all intents and purposes she discarded something you'd kill to have--a child.'"
This quote is a good one.  It sums up Ellie's feelings towards Katie and why she is so involved in this case.  Coop understands exactly how Ellie's mind was working and how she saw Katie and her trial.  Every case Ellie had ever done, she had been able to detach her feelings from and move on without becoming emotionally involved.  This case was the first time that she actually wanted to believe her client so badly that she would do anything to her defense.  Ellie didn't want Katie to suffer through jail so she manipulated the case into an insanity case, when she knew Katie was perfectly sane.  That was why it was so important that Ellie tried to detach her feelings, but it didn't work.  Will Ellie see her fault? I hope to find out soon.

Plain Truth

Okay, I know I have read a lot of Jodi Picoult before, but I heard really good reviews on this one.  So it starts out with a discovery of a dead newborn baby in an Amish barn.  The detective blamed the eighteen year old daughter living there named Katie.  Ellie, a lawyer and the cousin of Katie, even though they have never met, takes Katie's case.  All the evidence is against them because the morning the baby was found, Katie was bleeding vaginally.  She was brought to the hospital and they diagnosed that she had had a baby the night before.  She however denied it completely.  This was very bad considering she was not married and she was Amish.  Her faith didn't allow out of marriage intercourse.  The next day in court, Ellie ends up volunteering to be Katie's watcher for the next six weeks, meaning she has to stay on the Amish farm with Katie.  Katie's father, Aaron, does not approve at all.  Katie continues to deny the pregnancy, the birth, and the death.  Her boyfriend admits to never having known about the pregnancy and is devastated.  Katie is shunned from her faith for six weeks and her father refuses to speak to her.  Ellie brings in Cooper, a psychologist, to talk Katie out of her ignorance of all the events of that fateful night.  Ellie and Cooper end up falling in love and Katie's brother who quit the Amish religion so he could go to college apparently has been having Katie come visit him since he left.  Could she have found a romance there?  I don't know, but I hope to find out!

The Host

Okay, well for Christmas, I got The Host by Stefanie Meyer and I started to read it.  So far, its not as good as Twilight, but who can expect that?  No one.  So basically the story is that aliens who call themselves "souls" have taken over the human race.  The souls make the human unconscious and then the somehow connect themselves to the human's brain and the human can't think anymore.  So really the soul takes over the body.  But in this one case of "Wanderer", this particular soul's name, the human whose name was/is Melanie chose to fight Wanderer back.  Melanie's body is still controlled by Wanderer, but she can talk inside the brain to Wanderer.  Since Wanderer is influenced by Melanie, and before Melanie was captured she had been in love with Jared, Wanderer seems to be falling for Jared as well.  Melanie ends up bugging Wanderer so much that Wanderer thinks about finding herself a new body.  Wanderer wants to talk to her Healer before taking that dramatic action so she drives from somewhere in California to Arizona to see the Healer.  But on the way, Melanie reveals a secret that might lead them to Jared, the man they both love.  Wanderer, even though she feels like a traitor to her kind, really wants to meet him, so she lets Melanie lead her on the journey.  This book is kind of weird, but I like it so far.  I hope it gets a little bit more interesting in the next few chapters, though.

QUOTE

Hello.  This week, while researching my research paper about evolution, I found this awesome quote!  It was about my topic, which is : Should the theory of evolution be taught in high school.  This quote is for the argument AGAINST evolution in school, and I thought it was interesting.  Here it is:
"Question is: Can you tell me anything you know about evolution, any one thing, any one thing that is true? I tried that question on the geology staff at the Field Museum of Natural History and the only answer I got was silence. I tried it on the members of the Evolutionary Morphology Seminar in the University of Chicago, a very prestigious body of evolutionists, and all I got there was silence for a long time and eventually one person said, 'I do know one thing - it ought not to be taught in high school.'"-Dr. Colin Patterson
Isn't that interesting? I thought so!  It is weird because i would have thought that an evolutionist themselves would have thought the other way around, that evolution should be for sure taught in school.  This quote is obviously said by someone who is against evolution in school, so it is very biased, but still, it struck me as strange.  What kind of person would be an evolutionist, but still be AGAINST one of the most controversial topics of their own profession?  If I was an evolutionist, I would be all for evolution in schools, not saying that I am, but still!  Most people agree with their jobs, or maybe that is just my impression.  But, what kind of person would have a job that they didn't believe in?  I guess I could understand if they were extremely poor or in dire need of money or if they were only trying to support their family, but if it wasn't absolutely necessary that you had a job, wouldn't you find one that you agreed with?  I know this is biased because the only jobs I have ever had are babysitting jobs, but even those I pick and choose.  If the last time I babysat the kids were whiny and needy and difficult, I am probably not going to want to babysit for them again.  That is just how I see it.  But no matter how you see it, you have to admit it is a pretty good quote.
